Brighton Fashion Week – a breath of a fresh air on the catwalk

lunedì, mag 30, 2011, 10:30 / Brighton, United Kingdom

Launched in 2005 as Brighton Frocks, Brighton Fashion Week has become the alternative fashion event. Taking place from Tuesday, May 31st to Sunday, June 5th, venues across the city transform into catwalks to host The Couture Show, Brighton Frocks Show and Ready to Wear parades, celebrating fashion with live installations, concerts and workshops.

Not to be compared with London, Brighton Fashion Week has its own take on British fashion. ‘Brighton is a city with a sure sense of itself; its residents are discerning, with a cool, alternative approach to fashion. Brighton Fashion Week is reflective of this and is a real showcase of innovative, edgy design,’ says event founder and director Liz Bishop.

The impressive lineup for the Couture Show (Friday, June 3rd) includes Central Saint Martins graduate Masato Jones. In addition to heading his own label, Jones also works as a designer and pattern cutter for Giles Deacon. Also confirmed is Hertfordshire born Edward Finney who learned from the best while working on Savile Row, and as Assistant Menswear Designer at Alexander McQueen and John Galliano.

The festival turns altruistic mid-week with the War Child charity gig (June 1st). With sets from Dark Horses, The Agitator, La Shark and Filthy Boy, the event supports a network of independent organisations working around the world to help children affected by war. Meanwhile, models strutting the catwalk this season have the opportunity to become the Face of Brighton 2012, as the public vote for their favourite fashion models online.

Growing bigger and better each season, Bishop confirms this year is no exception. ‘We are anticipating great things for 2011 – the success of previous years has allowed us to grow from a weekend into a whole week of events, turning Brighton Fashion Week into a highly regarded alternative fashion event.’
