The Shop at Bluebird: London's fashion shopping gem
Friday, Nov 19, 2010, 2:14 PM / London, United Kingdom
Since owner Belle Robinson opened the doors in 2005, The Shop at Bluebird has evolved into a London retail institution. Located on Kings Road, Chelsea, the concept store is established within an Art Deco building, spanning over 10,000 square feet and residing within the former home of the Bluebird Food Market. As co-owner of women’s clothing retailer Jigsaw, Robinson is no stranger to the fashion industry. Her ability to combine concrete business knowledge with a distinct retail idea has cemented The Shop at Bluebird’s success, with the company now employing almost 30 staff.
The shop hosts a prolific designer line-up with approximately 70 different brands, including international labels such as Comme des Garçons, Isabel Marant and Victor & Rolf. Items are consistently rotating and stock frequently includes limited edition pieces and exclusive collaborations (most recently a S/S 10 collection by Peter Jensen & artist Laurie Simmons). While women’s wear remains the shop’s primary focus, men’s and children’s wear is also on offer, in addition to accessories, homeware and beauty products (even including an in-store spa).
The store’s inspiring interiors are frequently updated, with pieces such as vintage bikes, miniature race cars and antique suitcases scattered throughout the shop as permanent fixtures. Ongoing collaborations enable the store to maintain regular interior changes, previously showcasing Barneby Gates wall coverings and working with interiors aficionado Abigail Ahern to design a unique space with the shop.
The shop is well-known for its innovative approach resulting in a constantly evolving mix of fashion, lifestyle and art. Basso and Brooke have just launched a limited edition interiors line as part of their collaboration with the Californian wine producer Turning Leaf to be sold exclusively at the shop throughout August. The new interiors collection includes a drinks cabinet, wine tables and console table, all featuring Basso & Brooke’s designs and finished with a unique lacquering technique in either canary yellow or Bordeaux piano gloss.
Soft furnished items in the range have been created using the designers’ renowned digitally printed silk technique. There is also a range of limited edition luxury Al Fresco Dining Kits which includes a silk blanket, silk cushions, shrink-wrapped bottles of Turning Leaf Wine, a lacquered case and engraved glasses. Innovative collaborations of this kind will surely continue, making this corner of west London worth visiting.
