Blogs We Love: Advanced Style
Freitag, Jan. 14, 2011, 12:15 / New York City, United States
Advanced Style has received acclaim as one of the best street style blogs around, but what sets it apart from its counterparts is a wisdom beyond its years, seen in the eyes of its subjects. Blogger Ari Seth Cohen scopes New York City for the stylish members of the over 60 set and fills his pages with photos that tell a story of more than just fashion but of life lived. TribaSpace loves this blog because it illustrates that as the years progress, so does a person's sense of style, inhibition and the freedom to wear what makes him or her feel good. We had a chat with Cohen about why he chose this demographic and what makes their style so special.
What attracted you to shooting older folks?
I have always been inspired by older people. Growing up, I was best friends with my grandmother and I wanted to show that their is not an age limit to style, creativity and vitality. I also love the way that older people are comfortable with their personal style.
What is unique about elderly style?
Older people have had time to develop their personal style and this shows in their presentation. They know what works for them. A lot of the people I photograph wear a mix of their favorite vintage items and newer contemporary and trendy pieces. Their outfits tell a story.
How did this blog come to be?
I moved to New York a little over two years ago and was instantly inspired by all the stylish older people I saw walking around. I looked at other street style sites and noticed a lack of older people, so I began to approach people and take their photos. Older people have so much to say and I have learned so much from the amazing people I have met.
How do people react when you ask to photograph them?
Most people are surprised and flattered. Many of them tell me that I made their day! People are really open in New York, especially when it comes to creative projects.
How is shooting older people different than shooting younger people?
Younger people are more used to being approached, while older people seem to be more cautious and protective. I have to explain to them why I want their photo. They are also less used to being photographed and ask for direction. I usually allow them a few moments to get comfortable, so personalities definitely come out on their own.
What do you do for a living? Is fashion just a pleasure for you or do you involve yourself in the business side?
I am currently doing projects related to the blog and photography. I am interested in fashion and personal style, but more the stories behind the clothes and the people who wear them.
How would you describe your own style? What is your style philosophy?
I am a bit eccentric and a bit classic. My style philosophy is to have fun with your clothes and don't be afraid to takes risks.
How do you think blogging is changing the fashion industry?
It opens up the fashion world to new voices. It democratizes journalism and is a great way to share information fast, to a wide audience of people.
Where do you find inspiration?
I find inspiration in the people I meet everyday. Creative people who continue to express themselves and live happy and fulfilling lives.
How much time do you spend shooting people for the blog?
I spend most of my free time shooting people for Advanced Style. It is my passion and I love every moment of it.
