RS1: Robert Serek’s concept store in Warsaw

Freitag, Nov. 19, 2010, 13:02 / Warsaw, Poland

Warsaw, known as the “Phoenix City” after rising from the ashes of the devastation of World War II, seems to be home to a continual rebirth of sorts. One highly visible example of this ongoing renewal is Polish fashion visionary Robert Serek’s RS1 concept store. Housed in what was once a dingy Stalinist supermarket, RS1’s previous incarnation was as an HQ for the Comme des Garçons Guerilla Project, also run by Serek. Now that the Guerilla project has concluded, Serek has reinvented the space into one of Warsaw’s most interesting retail destinations.

Today RS1 carries pieces by Junya Watanabe, Undercover, Maison Martin Margiela, Ann Demeulemeester, Raf Simons, Tao, and of course, Comme Des Garçons. Serek, who also lectures in statistics at the University of Warsaw, is fascinated by, among other things, the Japanese avant-garde aesthetic and style. On the concept behind the store, Robert says “we like to make customers aware of the possibilities, make the impossible seem possible. We want to impact people’s awareness of fashion. We strive to promote what we think deserves attention.”

The space itself is breathtaking– Serek has managed to reclaim a dark part of Warsaw’s history into a haven for style and creativity. The walls have been stripped, the brickwork exposed and overlaid with a wrought iron structure that is at once imposing and unobtrusive. The ceiling, in direct contrast to the slabs of stone, has been painted a matte black, while drips of paint invitingly decorate the walls. An array of light bulbs hang from above, creating a luminescent landscape in which to display the shop’s exceptional merchandise.
